Wireless Access Point Installation Tips

Before you start installing your wireless access point, make sure you follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Some access points should be wall or ceiling-mounted while others work well on top of a desk. Some also have a sectorized broadcast area, which means the signal reaches only a 30 to 45 degree radius. Regardless of the mounting location, it should be mounted in an open area away from objects that could impede the wireless signal. And, remember, if there are other wireless technologies in the same room, they will affect the wireless performance.

Wireless access points typically come with default factory settings. You can change these settings remotely using telnet or a web browser. Make sure to enable optional encryption, which must be activated on all wireless devices. Also, make sure to update the firmware if you have not already done so. Some APs have an IP address that you can access by entering the device’s IP address. Some are dual-band, which gives you more configuration options, like mesh connections.

When you’re finished with the initial configuration, mount the wireless access point in a suitable location. A good location is where the network cable enters the room. Then, terminate the cable using a specialist crimping tool and plug it into the network socket at the back of the wireless access point. You’re now ready to feed the internet connection from the router. Don’t forget to label your wireless access point according to its manual.

Before you start configuring your wireless network gear, make sure you change the default password for the administrator. You can find out this password online. After logging in to the web GUI of each AP, double-check it and change the password. Some central wireless controllers even have individual web GUIs for each AP. Regardless of which, it’s always best to change the default password for security reasons. If you’re unsure, try to change it as soon as possible.

When installing your wireless network, always consider the type of cables that will work best. Cat5 and Cat6 cables will work for most access points, but Cat6 will last longer. If you can’t decide between the two, you can always opt for fiber optic cables, which can last up to miles. However, you’ll need to consider your budget and the distance of your wireless network before buying a new device. If you don’t want to spend much, choose a Cat5-compatible router.

Place your wireless access point in strategic locations. This will ensure optimal signal reception and functionality throughout the entire building. For best signal reception, it’s best to place the device under a ceiling or on a flat surface. Different vendors will suggest different placements, so make sure to follow the recommendations of the vendor and contact the manufacturer for assistance. Once you’ve purchased an access point, make sure to follow its installation instructions carefully. You may want to hire a professional if you don’t know how to install it.
