Wireless Access Point Installation Tips
Whether you’re installing a Wi-Fi access point at home or in a commercial property, there are a few tips to follow to ensure that you get the most out of your investment. When you’re choosing an AP, you’ll need to consider the number of devices in the area and the type of online activity you expect your users to perform. It helps to create a checklist or make a spreadsheet of your requirements, which will help you choose the best access point for your needs. There are many different types of WiFi access points to choose from, which can leave even the most seasoned wireless professional confused.
Before starting, label each AP with a name and an IP address that you can easily remember. If there are multiple APs in the same area, mark them on a floor plan map. If you’re unsure of how to label each one, take a picture of it so that you can refer to it later if you’re unsure of where you’ve placed it. Then, configure the APs as you wish.
Before installing your wireless AP, ensure that it’s out of reach of children. Installing them in reachable places is dangerous. Using false ceiling tiles or locking the components will prevent them from being accidentally switched off. And remember that you should lock all other components of your network, including the AP itself. To ensure their safety, use a lockable network rack to keep it secure. You’ll also want to prevent unauthorized users from accessing the web GUI.
Before you install your new wireless access point, follow the instructions included with your device. Some models are designed to be wall-mounted, while others are meant to sit on top of a desk. Some even limit the range of their broadcast signal to thirty to 45 degrees. Be sure to install your wireless access point in an open area, away from any metal or drop ceilings, as this can negatively impact the range and performance of your wireless network.
One of the most common causes of interference between wireless access points is the placement of adjacent APs. Make sure you choose a channel plan that keeps your devices from interfering with one another. In densely populated areas, this may not be an issue, but you should still take note of nearby access points. Check the available WiFi networks and plan your installation around these areas. If you can’t figure out how many devices will interfere, consider installing a few extra APs in strategic locations.
If your wireless access point is near a ceiling, you may find it difficult to install it because of its power requirements. A power over Ethernet (PoE) module can help alleviate this problem.
